1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved- 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. – Ephesians 2:1-7 (ESV)

1. The need for Grace

A. Our condition outside of Christ, DEAD in trespasses and sins.

In the area that matters most, the soul, they have no life. They are blind to the reality, demands, and glory of Christ – and they do not love him. They are as deaf to the Holy Spirit as a corpse – Kent Hughes

“the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.” – Galatians 5:19-21 (ESV)

B. The result, under God’s wrath

2. The Work of Grace

A. His work, But God

B. His motives, rich mercy & great love

“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” – Exodus 34:6-7 (ESV)

C. His Action on our behalf

“But God… made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus – Ephesians 2:5-6 (ESV)

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. – Colossians 2:13-14 (ESV)

“and has lifted us right out of the old life to take our place with him in Christ into the heavens.”

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

3. The Purpose for Grace

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. – Ephesians 2:7 (ESV)

A. To display his grace

B. To display his kindness

Joel Peabody

Joel grew up overseas watching his parents proclaim the Gospel in Morocco and Spain; at ten, he recognized his own need for Christ’s redemption. He met and married Deb in Bible College and God has blessed them with the joy of raising two children, Logan and Katie, who are now married and serving God in their own families. Through more than 30 years together, they have watched God faithfully care for and prepare them to in turn minister to others.
