When all human hopes have let us down, we might be ready for the only real salvation that exists. – Ray Ortlund

1. Jesus doesn’t do what you expect

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. – Mark 10:45 (ESV)

But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. – Matthew 3:15 (ESV)

The baptism is the beginning of his humiliation as he faithfully submits to the Father’s will and willingly identifies himself with sinful humanity. – Danny Akin

2. The Father doesn’t do what you expect

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence— as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence! – Isaiah 64:1-3 (ESV)

3. The Spirit doesn’t do what you expect

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. – Hebrews 4 (ESV)

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (ESV)
