I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. — 1 Timothy 3:14-15 (ESV)

  1. What does he say and why is he addressing this?

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.  — 1 Timothy 2:8-15 (ESV)

  1. Disruptions in their gatherings
  2. Disruptions in their leadership

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; — 1 Timothy 2:8 (ESV)

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. — James 4:1-3 (ESV)

Because the church is eternally, cosmically, missionally important, be unified so that Christ is not diminished through our lives.

likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. — 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (ESV)

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. — 1 Timothy 2:11-15 (ESV)

  1. What does he mean by…

Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 1 Tim 5:17

Let a woman in quietness Learn In all submission; But to teach, I do not permit a woman Neither to exercise authority over a man But to be in quietness

  1. How do we apply this at Grace Church?
Chris Daukas

Chris grew up in a moral home, but didn’t find the grace of Christ until he was a sophomore in college. He began to devour the Word and was soon helping to lead bible studies, outreaches, and worship at church. He married his beautiful wife, Tara, in the summer of 2002.
