1. Membership begins and ends with the glory of Jesus.

2. The Christian’s response of devotion to Christ is expressed toward Christ’s people.

1. Devotion to the Shared Word

These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. – John 14:25-26 (ESV)

2. Devotion to a Shared Walk

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. – Hebrews 3:12 (ESV)

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. – Hebrews 10:23-25 (ESV)

Is a head still a head if it doesn’t have a body? Is a friend really your friend if you can’t stand his wife? … is a friend one who comes around your house, hangs out, and expects to have a good time, all the while getting digs in on your bride? Who wants a friend who rolls his eyes and sighs every time your wife walks into the room? Apparently, some people imagine Jesus wants friends like that as they roll their eyes and sigh over the church. – Kevin DeYoung and Ted Cluck

3. Devotion to Shared Worship

4. Devotion to a Shared Witness

By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. – John 13:35 (ESV)
